    Emirati student and expatriate teacher views on problem-based learning in UAE education courses

    Understanding how Emirati students value Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in their learning of tertiary subjects such as Business and Information Technology (IT) is an essential component of the pedagogy adopted in UAE Higher Education to achieve active learning in those subject areas. This research targeted the ‘voice’ of Emirati students and their expatriate teachers in the use and subjective evaluation of PBL in their tertiary education experience. Their documented perceptions are available for future UAE education policy development. Currently, there is a lack of understanding of how effectively PBL is being implemented when teaching the subjects of Business and IT. This research took place at a UAE Higher College of Technology where PBL was being used as a part of internal assessments for Business and IT in the students’ first bachelor year of study. Data was collected from a purposive sample of 174 Emirati students and 8 teachers using Mixed Methods design - a questionnaire, student and teacher interviews and classroom observations of students participating in PBL group work were the tools used to establish student voice. The questionnaire results indicated that there is a strong consensus from the Emirati students (between 60 to 80%) and expatriate teachers (between 90 to 100%) in support of the PBL pedagogy being used as a form of assessment within their Business and IT classes. However, 40% of the student interviewees were not satisfied with PBL. The eight teachers were strongly satisfied with PBL as a form of assessment for their Business/IT students. The learning of Business/IT content and implementation of group work for projects were considered to engage students and motivate them although projects were considered a challenge in the PBL process. Students generally need better support as do the teachers in implementing new pedagogies which impact group dynamics, learning styles, resources and learning management. assist Emirati students who may be struggling with group dynamics, independent learning, and lack of teacher support and time management. Recommendations are made that for the sustainability of new pedagogies such as PBL, student and teacher voices be incorporated into curriculum decision making in UAE Higher Education taking account cultural and longitudinal implications for the whole education system

    Second-order phase transition at the phase boundary through the FeRh first-order metamagnetic phase transition

    The phase coexistence present through first-order phase transitions implies the presence of phase boundary walls, which can be of finite size. Better understanding of the phase boundary wall properties will provide an insight into the dynamics of first-order phase transitions. Here, by combining x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy investigations with magnetometry measurements of magnetic relaxation through the thermally activated first-order metamagnetic phase transition present in the B2-ordered FeRh alloy, we are able to isolate the dynamic behaviour of the phase boundary wall present in this system. These investigations reveal a change in the nature of the dynamic behaviour and critical scaling of the relaxation time centred around the point of maximum phase coexistence within the phase transition. All of this behaviour can be attributed to the introduction of exchange coupling across the phase boundary wall and raises questions about the role of latent heat in dynamic behaviour of this region

    The KMOS Cluster Survey (KCS). I. The Fundamental Plane and the Formation Ages of Cluster Galaxies at Redshift 1.4 < Z < 1.6

    We present the analysis of the fundamental plane (FP) for a sample of 19 massive red-sequence galaxies (M⋆>4×1010{M}_{\star }\gt 4\times {10}^{10} M⊙{M}_{\odot }) in three known overdensities at 1.39<z<1.611.39\lt z\lt 1.61 from the K-band Multi-object Spectrograph (KMOS) Cluster Survey, a guaranteed-time program with spectroscopy from the KMOS at the VLT and imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope. As expected, we find that the FP zero-point in B band evolves with redshift, from the value 0.443 of Coma to −0.10 ± 0.09, −0.19 ± 0.05, and −0.29 ± 0.12 for our clusters at z = 1.39, z = 1.46, and z = 1.61, respectively. For the most massive galaxies (logM⋆/M⊙>11\mathrm{log}{M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot }\gt 11) in our sample, we translate the FP zero-point evolution into a mass-to-light-ratio M/L evolution, finding ΔlogM/LB=(−0.46±0.10)z{\rm{\Delta }}\mathrm{log}M/{L}_{B}=(-0.46\pm 0.10)z, ΔlogM/LB=(−0.52±0.07)z{\rm{\Delta }}\mathrm{log}M/{L}_{B}=(-0.52\pm 0.07)z, to ΔlogM/LB=(−0.55±0.10)z{\rm{\Delta }}\mathrm{log}M/{L}_{B}=(-0.55\pm 0.10)z, respectively. We assess the potential contribution of the galaxy structural and stellar velocity dispersion evolution to the evolution of the FP zero-point and find it to be ~6%–35% of the FP zero-point evolution. The rate of M/L evolution is consistent with galaxies evolving passively. Using single stellar population models, we find an average age of 2.33−0.51+0.86{2.33}_{-0.51}^{+0.86} Gyr for the logM⋆/M⊙>11\mathrm{log}{M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot }\gt 11 galaxies in our massive and virialized cluster at z = 1.39, 1.59−0.62+1.40{1.59}_{-0.62}^{+1.40} Gyr in a massive but not virialized cluster at z = 1.46, and 1.20−0.47+1.03{1.20}_{-0.47}^{+1.03} Gyr in a protocluster at z = 1.61. After accounting for the difference in the age of the universe between redshifts, the ages of the galaxies in the three overdensities are consistent within the errors, with possibly a weak suggestion that galaxies in the most evolved structure are older

    Asymmetric magnetic relaxation behavior of domains and domain walls observed through the FeRh first-order metamagnetic phase transition

    The phase coexistence present through a first-order phase transition means there will be finite regions between the two phases where the structure of the system will vary from one phase to the other, known as a phase boundary wall. This region is said to play an important but unknown role in the dynamics of the first-order phase transitions. Here, by using both x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and magnetometry techniques to measure the temporal isothermal development at various points through the thermally activated first-order metamagnetic phase transition present in the near-equiatomic FeRh alloy, we are able to isolate the dynamic behavior of the domain walls in this system. These investigations reveal that relaxation behavior of the domain walls changes when phase coexistence is introduced into the system and that the domain-wall dynamics is different to the macroscale behavior. We attribute this to the effect of the exchange coupling between regions of either magnetic phase changing the dynamic properties of domain walls relative to bulk regions of either phase. We also believe this behavior comes from the influence of the phase boundary wall on other magnetic objects in the system

    Effective fisheries management instrumental in improving fish stock status

    Marine fish stocks are an important part of the world food system and are particularly important for many of the poorest people of the world. Most existing analyses suggest overfishing is increasing, and there is widespread concern that fish stocks are decreasing throughout most of the world. We assembled trends in abundance and harvest rate of stocks that are scientifically assessed, constituting half of the reported globalmarine fish catch. For these stocks, on average, abundance is increasing and is at proposed target levels. Compared with regions that are intensively managed, regions with less-developed fisheries management have, on average, 3-fold greater harvest rates and half the abundance as assessed stocks. Available evidence suggests that the regions without assessments of abundance have little fisheries management, and stocks are in poor shape. Increased application of area-appropriate fisheries science recommendations and management tools are still needed for sustaining fisheries in places where they are lacking.Fil: Hilborn, Ray.     The KMOS Cluster Survey (KCS) II - The Effect of Environment on the Structural Properties of Massive Cluster Galaxies at Redshift 1.391.611.39 1.61

    We present results on the structural properties of massive passive galaxies in three clusters at 1.39<z<1.61 from the KMOS Cluster Survey. We measure light-weighted and mass-weighted sizes from optical and near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope imaging and spatially resolved stellar mass maps. The rest-frame R-band sizes of these galaxies are a factor of ∼2−3 smaller than their local counterparts. The slopes of the relation between the stellar mass and the light-weighted size are consistent with recent studies in clusters and the field. Their mass-weighted sizes are smaller than the rest frame R-band sizes, with an average mass-weighted to light-weighted size ratio that varies between ∼0.45 and 0.8 among the clusters. We find that the median light-weighted size of the passive galaxies in the two more evolved clusters is ∼24% larger than for field galaxies, independent of the use of circularized effective radii or semi-major axes. These two clusters also show a smaller size ratio than the less evolved cluster, which we investigate using color gradients to probe the underlying M∗/LH160 gradients. The median color gradients are ∇z−H∼−0.4 mag dex−1, twice the local value. Using stellar populations models, these gradients are best reproduced by a combination of age and metallicity gradients. Our results favor the minor merger scenario as the dominant process responsible for the observed galaxy properties and the environmental differences at this redshift. The environmental differences support that clusters experience accelerated structural evolution compared to the field, likely via an epoch of enhanced minor merger activity during cluster assembly

    Sizes, colour gradients and resolved stellar mass distributions for the massive cluster galaxies in XMMUJ2235-2557 at z = 1.39

    We analyse the sizes, colour gradients and resolved stellar mass distributions for 36 massive and passive galaxies in the cluster XMMUJ2235-2557 at z = 1.39 using optical and near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. We derive light-weighted Sérsic fits in five HST bands (i775, z850, Y105, J125, H160), and find that the size decreases by ~20 per cent going from i775 to H160 band, consistent with recent studies. We then generate spatially resolved stellar mass maps using an empirical relationship between M*/LH160 and (z850- H160) and use these to derive mass-weighted Sérsic fits: the mass-weighted sizes are ~41 per cent smaller than their rest-frame r-band counterparts compared with an average of ~12 per cent at z ~ 0. We attribute this evolution to the evolution in the M*/LH160 and colour gradient. Indeed, as expected, the ratio of mass-weighted to light-weighted size is correlated with the M*/L gradient, but is also mildly correlated with the mass surface density and mass-weighted size. The colour gradients (∇z- H) are mostly negative, with a median value of ~0.45 mag dex-1, twice the local value. The evolution is caused by an evolution in age gradients along the semimajor axis (a), with ∇age = dlog (age)/dlog (a) ~- 0.33, while the survival of weaker colour gradients in old, local galaxies implies that metallicity gradients are also required, with ∇Z = dlog (Z)/dlog (a) ~- 0.2. This is consistent with recent observational evidence for the inside-out growth of passive galaxies at high redshift, and favours a gradual mass growth mechanism, such as minor mergers

    Peserta didik mempunyai gaya belajar yang berbeda-beda. Gaya belajar tersebut meliputi auditori, visual dan kinestetik (VAK). Seorang guru harus mampu memenuhi kebutuhan masing-masing gaya belajar peserta didik tersebut. Salah satu cara yang dapat dilakukan adalah dengan menggunakan media pembelajaran berbasis VAK. Media pembelajaran berbasis VAK dapat dipenuhi dengan menyisipkan file video di dalamnya. Selain itu, penggunaan file video sebagai media pembelajaran mendukung implementasi pembelajaran saintifik pada kurikulum 2013. Namun, belum semua guru memiliki kemampuan untuk mengemas file video tersebut dalam bentuk media pembelajaran. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan guru-guru di SMA Negeri 1 Teras dan SMA Negeri 1 Boyolali dalam membuat media pembelajaran berbasis VAK dengan kombinasi software Format Factory, U-Lead dan PowerPoint. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terjadi peningkatan kemampuan para guru di SMA Negeri 1 Teras dan SMA Negeri 1 Boyolali dalam membuat media pembelajaran. Peningkatan kemampuan guru-guru tersebut berada di atas target yang direncanakan. Rerata peningkatan kemampuan guru-guru di SMA Negeri 1 Teras 7,87% di atas target, sedangkan di SMA Negeri 1 Boyolali 9,58% di atas target. A teacher must be able to fulfill the needs of individual students\u27 learning styles. One way that can be applied is using Visual, Audio and Kinesthetic (VAK) learning media based. VAK-learning media based can be created by inserting video files on it. In addition, using video file as a learning media can support the implementation of scientific learning on the 2013 curriculum. However, not all teachers have the ability to use video files into a learning media. The purpose of this study is to improve the teachers\u27 ability at SMA Negeri 1 Teras and SMAN 1 Boyolali on making VAK-learning media based with a combination of Format Factory, U-Lead and PowerPoint software. The results showed that the teachers\u27 ability on making VAK-learning media based was increased. Increased the teachers\u27 ability was above planned target score. The mean score of the teachers\u27 ability at SMA Negeri 1 Teras 7.87% above the target, while at SMAN 1 Boyolali 9.58% above the target
